Job Title: APP Director - Pediatric Surgical Specialties

Description: The APP Director provides strategic direction, leadership, oversight, and support for Pediatric Surgical Specialties throughout the Intermountain system and develops a culture of highly-reliable care for patients. The APP Director collaborates and communicates effectively with related APP, Physicians, and other caregivers across the Intermountain system and across the disciplines. This position also partners and collaborates with other leaders in the Specialty to create a professional and positive environment for APP’s to do their work. This position champions APP growth and development, innovation, and continuous improvement. This leader promotes excellence in the fundamentals of extraordinary care by engaging with APP’s and other teams across Intermountain Healthcare.

Advanced Practice Providers within the following specialties are currently supported by this APP leader: Pediatric General Surgery, Trauma Services, Transplant, and Neurosurgery.

This position will be a dual role, anticipated to spend 50% of their time clinically and 50% on leadership responsibilities.

Scope
The APP Director is a system-wide role reporting to the Medical Director of the Specialty and has responsibilities reporting to the APP Executive Director. While primary relationships include all their specific specialty APP’s, both affiliate and employed, across disciplines. This position is expected to collaborate, communicate, and build relationships with all members of the healthcare team.

Job Essentials

  • Maintains clinical responsibilities
  • Leads process to establish evidence-based and/or best care for our patients, and ensures these standards are effectively implemented and monitored across Intermountain within the Specialty and helps to map the journey for patients from specialty care to community-based care.
  • Performs professional clinical evaluation for all APP within specialty with collaboration and feedback from medical directors, clinical practice managers, and other team caregivers as appropriate.
  • Serves as collaborator for care delivery models that leverage APP skillset and value.
  • Acts as steward for APPs within group committee participation.
  • Leads the process to identify where care should be provided with clinical program leadership and APP’s.
  • Develops and implements a communication process which regularly informs and connects APP’s from across the system within Specialty.
  • Communicates information from Leadership to APPs within Specialty.
  • Develops, educates, and drives results for key performance metrics within the Specialty to include, but not limited, to patient experience, CMS metrics, documentation metrics, and complication rates.
  • Assesses the access and demand/need for Specialty APP’s and assists clinical program leadership, specialty care, and Medical Group in the recruitment process. Participates in recruitment and retention of APCs within clinical specialty.
  • Effectively addresses performance concerns of APP’s. Serves as the system expert for peer review for the specialty cases and ensures a rapid response to requests to evaluate care or concerns.
  • Participates in the Medical Specialties Clinical Program strategic planning process. Helps develop annual goals, and ensures goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Supports appropriate research endeavors for the Specialty and collaborates with the Office of Research.
  • Responsible to plan and lead the onboarding, orientation, and professional development plans for new APP team members to ensure there is clear understanding of care processes.

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA), Education must be obtained through a nationally accredited institution, and will be verified.
  • Active Utah Medical or Clinical Licensure, or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Three years of clinical experience working within one of the designated specialties.
  • Two years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings.
  • Two years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.
  • Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes or technology that enhance safety.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications
  • Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program)
  • Experience working in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care, etc.)
  • Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.

Physical Requirements:

  • Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
  • Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
  • See and read computer monitors and documents.
  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
