What's On The Menu? Injury Prevention At The Dinner Table

CoxHealth, Springfield, MO

BackgroundThe best way to reach kids is through their stomach! MethodsOur Injury Prevention Coordinator saw an opportunity to reach children, their parents, and other area organizations with our child safety messages, all at once! By providing safety-themed kids menus to local restaurants, we accomplish all of these things. Using three different safety themed coloring sheets (fire, water, and bicycle), our facility can reach thousands of area kids with this critical information in a fun, interactive way. ResultsEach themed menu has its own games and graphics geared toward that area, as well as a section reserved for the individual restaurant to include their kids menu. A great, interactive example from the fire safety menu is a fire truck maze to find a house fire. On the back is an example Fire Escape Plan, along with questions to prompt the child to draw their own- having two ways out and a safe meeting place. We also provide packs of crayons to accompany the menus. Conclusion We designed the menu activity sheets to reach families at the dinner table. They also carry QR codes that take parents to our Facebook page for more tips and content that are always up-to-date. For content, we collaborate with other agencies and with several local restaurants to provide thousands of kids coloring menus to the community. The feedback we have gotten from restaurants and community members has been fantastic! This is a program we will definitely keep and hope to grow in the future!
