Early Risers 1A: Update on Abusive Head Trauma: Facts, Controversies, and Conspiracy Theories
Speaker: | Mark Dias, MD Hershey, PA |
Moderator: | Kennith Sartorelli, MD Burlington, VT |
Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) is the most severe form of child abuse, with mortality rates up to 25% and neurological morbidity in as many as 80% of survivors. The proper identification and evaluation of AHT are important to "get right", as missed cases may result in subsequent injuries in up to 40% while improper incarceration of innocents has equally devastating consequences. This talk discusses the current "state of the art" regarding our knowledge about AHT – including the differential diagnosis, timing of injuries, and controversies, emphasizing what facts are presently known, what remains to be elucidated, and what passes as unsubstantiated conspiracy theory.
Early Risers 1B: Changes in ACS Verification Review - Effect on Pediatric Trauma Centers
Speaker: | Todd Maxson, MD, Little Rock, AR |
Moderator: | David Meagher Jr, MD, Dayton, OH |
The ACS' verification process is undergoing radical change. There is a change in how criteria are determined, how the verification process works and how the PRQ and reports will look. The integration of the TQIP data into the verification process is on the horizon and will even further change how this works for trauma centers. Come hear what's happening and in the VRC and get a jump on implementation in your program.

This immersive, hands-on workshop will begin with an overview of pediatric disaster triage and disaster planning principles. This will include a discussion about triage algorithm, resource utilization, policies and procedures, as well as unique aspects of care of children involved in disaster. Participants then experience three different types of simulation modalities that may be used for disaster triage education.

Early Rises 2A: Trauma Research Methodology Workshop
Speaker: Laura Cassidy, PhD, Milwaukee, WI
Moderator: Rita Burke, PhD, Los Angeles, CA
OBJECTIVES
- To understand the basic study designs for pediatric trauma research
- To learn about the existing databases that can be used for pediatric trauma research
During this panel, clinicians, researchers and students will learn about basic study designs to conduct research in trauma. Topics discussed will include cross-sectional, retrospective and prospective study designs. Strengths and limitations of each design will be discussed. There will be an overview of existing databases commonly used for pediatric trauma research. The panel will also provide a forum for participants to share their own research experiences, as well as a chance to receive feedback on potential research proposals.
